This photograph was taken in the Pacific Northwest in Washington state, USA. The Puget Sound is home to beautiful sunsets, rocky shores and the San Juan Islands in the distance. These fir trees have the very best seats to view nature's delightful displays of awesome beauty!
An ancient rhyme has been used to predict weather based on red or pink skies, especially in mid-latitude areas of the world. You probably know it. It goes like this:
"A red sky in the morning, is a sailor's warning.
A red sky at night, is a sailor's delight."
A reddish sunrise, caused by the diffraction of light through particles suspended in the air, often foreshadows a storm arriving within the day. Conversely, a reddish sunset often indicates that a storm system is on the east side (opposite the sunset), travelling away from the observer.
Pink/red skies are even mentioned in the Bible in Matthew 16:2-3... "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather; for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening."
A similar adage appears in a poem by William Shakespeare. He said something similar in his Venus and Adonis (1593):
'Like a red morn that ever yet betokened, Wreck to the seaman, tempest to the field,Sorrow to the shepherds, woe unto the birds,Gusts and foul flaws to herdmen and to herds.'
